According to a TforG’s report, the Colombian economy is growing at a rate of 4.2%. The country spends 7.6% of its GDP on healthcare services. 76% of the total expenditure is funded by government. Colombia covers around 97% of its population under a universal medical system called the “General System of Social Security in Health” or “Sistema General de Seguridad Social en Salud (SGSSS)”. The number of physicians (1.7 per 1000 inhabitants) and the number of acute hospital beds (1.10 per 1000 inhabitants) in Colombia is less as compared to Brazil and Chile. It is currently focusing on expansion of treatment coverage, expanding national pharmaceutical formulary and to adopt a preventive care model instead of curative care.
