The National Institute of Cancerology (INCAN) acquired an automated technology team to ease the detection of infection-causing bacteria thereby making diagnoses more accurate and 50% faster than traditional methods.

The BD Kiestra InoqulA equipment has enabled continuous processing and given the opportunity to bring “Telebacteriology” through high-resolution automated imaging to facilitate remote diagnosis.

The INCAN stated that bacteria evolve daily, and can get to the point of not being controlled. Safety and promptness in bacterial identification and antimicrobial susceptibility studies are essential in the management of patients with infectious diseases, and rapid timely diagnosis and treatment reduce not only morbidity but also the spread of infection. The equipment installed in the clinical laboratory of the microbiology area could contribute to decrease the days of hospitalization of patients and thereby reduce costs associated with the complications suffered by patients.

According to studies by the World Health Organization (WHO), infectious diseases are the second cause of death – just below cardiovascular diseases – because infectious agents cause more than 25% of deaths each year. In a statement, the institute adds that, in 2014 alone, in Mexico there were more than 39 million cases of respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary tract and periodontal infections, among others. Becton Dickinson’s in Latin America, stated that the type of automation that these diagnostic systems allows doctors to respond more quickly and improve the quality of results.

Pharmaceutical companies across the globe earn multi-million dollars by raising the price of their medicines arbitrarily.

Pharmaceutical companies across the globe earn multi-million dollars by raising the price of their medicines arbitrarily. This reduces the access to medicine and patients which could lead to loss of health and life according to the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF).

[thrive_leads id=’7630′]

An example of this is the antiretroviral Kaletra, for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which Abbot sells in Mexico at a price of USD2.96 per pill, which amounts to more than USD2,100 annually.

World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that about 700,000 people die in Latin America every year due to lack of access to medicines. Families in the region spend an average of 30% of their income on health issues. The AHF emphasized on promoting early detection of the disease to curb HIV epidemic.

Currently, only 60% of HIV positive people in Mexico are aware of the available treatments. Government can provide treatment only if the authorities can buy generic medicines at more affordable prices. The organization urged the Mexican government to take advantage of the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

[thrive_leads id=’7635′]

Additionally, pharmaceuticals prefer to extend their patents on medicines to generate profits at the expense human life. It was suggested by the AHF that patient organizations be included in meetings where governments and pharmaceutical companies discuss reductions in drug prices.

In Mexico, seven out of 10 deaths are associated with overweight and obesity. Amongst the Latin American countries, Mexico ranks first in childhood obesity.

Obesity leads to numerous chronic degenerative disorders whose treatments are expensive and exhausting leading to rise in healthcare expenses.

The Ministry of Health (MoH) plans to increase awareness amongst its people about healthy lifestyles and prevention of obesity. The MoH will be implementing public policies to keep its citizens healthy and fit. The ministry plans to organize free exercise sessions in parks and public squares to improve public awareness about physical activity.

More than 2000 bariatric surgeries have been performed to improve the quality of life. At CDMX, “Health Kiosks” have been set up for basic health checkups. In addition to the 220 health centers and 12 clinics, the Supply Center offers care for those who willing to change their lifestyle.

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has led to the transformation of Tijuana to become the world capital in the manufacture of medical devices.

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has led to the transformation of Tijuana to become the world capital in the manufacture of medical devices.

The manufacturing units located in Tijuana manufacture millions of medical devices from intravenous bags to artificial respirators for the global market. Around 70% of the medical device manufacturing companies in Tijuana are American-owned including Medtronic, Carefusion, DJO Global, etc.

New taxes on imports are likely to increase the cost of medical devices in the US with companies keeping their major operations outside the country. The US imports of medical devices have more than tripled from 2001 to 2016 reaching USD43.9 billion, according to BMI Research.

Mexico purchases most of its raw material and capital machinery from United States. If America imposes the border tax, Mexico could impose a tariff on raw materials supplied from the US. This will lead to increasing production cost making companies to shift to lower cost suppliers affecting the American suppliers.

Top federal authorities from Mexico have showed their anguish over Trump. According to them, the close cooperation has been built by two neighbors over the years, but, USA underpins Mexico’s economic and security interests. And after the first few weeks of the Trump presidency, Mexico is on the verge of losing it. A quick look at the relationship shows that America can’t be first without Mexico. U.S.-Mexico trade supports 6 million jobs nationally. Those numbers reflect Mexico’s status as Texas’ biggest trading partner and third-largest for America. More than just exchanging goods, Texas and Mexico actually build things together. Big things, valuable things like cars, medical devices and consumer electronics. Mexico is unique among America’s trading partners because Texas workers benefit from both exports to Mexico and imports from Mexico. 40% of the value of finished products US import from Mexico is US content, for China, it’s 4 percent. A trade war with Mexico will lay off all those jobs and opportunities.

With a population of more than 122 million and the only developing destination in North America, Mexico is the 15th largest economy in the world. Its healthcare system is a mix of public and private, and the destination just recently achieved universal healthcare coverage. Mexico’s private healthcare system is amazingly big, as approximately 66% of the 4,500 hospitals nationwide are privately owned. But the public healthcare system is also very efficient, as two thirds of its population relies on it, and national health authorities are working on an everyday basis to make it more inclusive and effective. The Mexican government and the private sector are constantly striving to improve the quality of service and obtain world recognized certifications, in order to become a more reliable destination for patients traveling out of the United States and other countries, who are seeking medical attention provided by qualified physicians, in state-of-the-art facilities at reasonable prices. Mexico is one of the top 10 nations in the Americas for Medical Tourism. It is considered an ideal destination for this market segment, due to its proximity to the United States, infrastructure, air connectivity and its cost-benefit advantage over other Latin American countries. The Tourism Secretariat of Mexico (SECTUR) has been working in a highly effective communication campaign that was launched three year ago, with the main goal of positioning Mexico as a world-class medical tourism destination. This has allowed Mexico to become one of the top medical tourism destinations and host a huge amount of medical tourists, coming especially from North and Latin America, due to high quality treatments with efficient cost. Specifically, the state of Yucatán, through its Secretariat of Tourism Promotion (Secretaría de Fomento al Turismo: SEFOTUR), has implemented a global campaign with the objective of turning the city of Merida into one of the most important medical tourism destinations in the country, highlighting its hospital infrastructure, air connectivity, high quality accommodations as well as its cultural richness.

Mexico has become an ideal location to conduct clinical trials for drugs and devices as Mexican researchers are well trained, often in the US or Europe. Moreover, Mexican trial data can be included in multicenter trials for Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval. Many companies are already harnessing opportunities to conduct trials in Mexico. To boost the registry of more clinical trials, the government has taken initiatives to speed up the trial approval process, while not risking public health. Mexico’s regulator COFEPRIS has updated the legal framework and measures for clinical trials, taking into account the balance between promoting economic development and protecting patients. COFEPRIS also has accelerated its regulatory approval process, encouraging multinational companies to introduce their products first in Mexico. The country has strong academic institutions and hospitals, some of which have partnered with US institutions and are seeking to establish more. Research and clinical partnerships that provide opportunities for training and best-practice sharing are of greatest interest. The key to successful partnerships is to develop a collaborative approach designed to improve capacity in Mexico while providing research and training opportunities for US institutions. Millions of Americans travel to Mexico for treatments not covered by insurance as healthcare facilities there are on par with the US. There are significant opportunities to develop programs that provide surgeries and treatment that are covered by insurance but could be performed for far less expenses in Mexico than in the US.
