Find out which products will expand in Chile next year due to market demand

Chile is known as one of the top consumers of
medical technology in Latin
America,
not only in the private medical sector via acquisitions of cutting-edge robotic
surgery systems, but also in public health facilities that strive to meet the
same standards as private ones. In this respect, great strides have been made with
nuclear medicine. In addition, the Chilean government has passed the Cancer Law
(Ley del Cáncer), which will come into effect in October 2022 and whose goal is
“establish a regulatory framework for the planning, development and
implementation of public policies, programs and actions aimed at establishing
the causes and preventing the increase in the incidence of cancer.” This law
has two interesting features: i) promoting cooperation between the private and
public sectors, between institutions and also between industry sectors; ii) the
responsibility of Chile’s Health Ministry to create a National Cancer Plan that
with a span of at least 5 years. The portals of Mercado Público or Public
Market already have open tenders for devices for this type of treatment,
especially for breast cancer.

GHI also recently
conducted an analysis of procurement trends in Chilean hospitals, calculating
the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) between 2019 and 2023. Based on those
calculations and other analyses, we share in this report the types of medical
equipment with the highest projected growth as well as the types that will
contract the most by 2022.

Projections for hospital market demand in the country

As of August 2021, Peru’s National Cancer Law went
into effect. Its primary objective is to “guarantee universal, free and
priority coverage of health services for all oncology patients, regardless of
the type of cancer they suffer from.” However, the law also authorizes the
Ministry of Health to carry out the technological renovation of biomedical
equipment, as well as the expansion and improvement of the oncology hospital
infrastructure at a national level, according to the budgetary availability of
its sector.” In line with this great advance for Peruvians, purchases of linear
accelerators and high-precision radiotherapy equipment by public and private
hospitals have been recorded in the last year. Thanks to this new standard, and
the intangibility of the cancer budget, which prevents resources from being
diverted to other services, an excellent opportunity has opened up for the
medical device industry.

GHI recently conducted an analysis of procurement

The areas projected to bounce back quickly in 2022 and offer the best sales potential

The medical devices/equipment market has had
exponential growth in recent years and Brazil’s market for these products
offers significant growth opportunities for global players. As the largest
economy in South America, Brazil spends around 8% of its total GDP on
healthcare. According to MarketResearchFuture, Brazil’s medical devices market
is expected to reach a value of US$1.8
billion by 2023, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9% projected for
2017-2023. Innovation and new
technologies have led this healthcare segment, and particularly it’s been
technological advancements that have led to the launch of high-tech medical
devices that have totally revolutionized the perception of healthcare, as in
the case of PET/MR systems.

As observed by Global Health Intelligence
(GHI) in a report published
in April 2021, Brazil
has experienced solid growth in its healthcare industry and Brazilian hospitals
significantly increased their amounts of base installed equipment in 2020, with
the strongest growth occurring with ventilators, EKG machines and infusion
pumps. The urgent needs caused by the COVID-19 pandemic could explain the
growth with these product categories, but the report also shows growth with
other categories.

Going forward, data from GHI’s HospiScope database suggests further expansion is on
the way in 2022. Below we break down 10 categories of medical equipment with
the highest projected growth in 2022, along with 5 categories projected to have
the biggest contractions next year.

Multiple categories with powerful projected growth next year and the 5 which will have the biggest contractions

Despite the devastation of the COVID-19
pandemic, there are grounds for optimism with regard to Mexico’s medical
equipment/devices market. For example, a July 2021 article from Fitch Solutions
projects that Mexico’s
medical device market will register a 2020-2025 CAGR of 8.6% in USD,
giving it a value of US$7.6 billion by 2025. The firm further forecasts
double-digit growth for the Mexican medical device market in 2022.

In reviewing Global Health Intelligence’s
(GHI’s) recent research on the area, which comes from our HospiScope database,
we noticed strong growth
in diagnostic imaging equipment in Mexico during 2020
and recently highlighted 3
equipment categories that posted double-digit growth last year.

As a company, GHI has been tracking base
installed equipment for hospitals in Latin America since 2014, and this has
allowed us to create historical projections based on the changes we have
observed as our team directly confirms equipment counts as part of the constant
updating of HospiScope. We recently calculated CAGR for more than 30 different
categories of medical equipment in Mexico for 2019-2023. Based on those
calculations, below we offer projections for the 12 medical equipment
categories in Mexico which are likely to have the strongest growth in 2022 — along
with 5 that are projected to suffer the sharpest contractions.

Understand top growth and contraction areas to help refine your strategic planning

Despite the devastation wrought by the
pandemic, it apparently has not negatively affected the medical
equipment/devices market in Colombia. In fact, the market has experienced some
growth…and 2022 could well offer powerful opportunities for manufacturers who
target this large (2,000+ facilities) hospital market.

Published
in May 2021, the Informe de infraestructura y capacidad instalada — known as the Infrastructure and Installed
Capacity Report in English and published by Colombia’s Medical Device and
Consumable Medical Goods Board — shows that the country’s hospital infrastructure increased by 3% in
2020 amidst highly uncertain conditions. This growth has been further supported
through the donations made this past July by the Colombian Red Cross, the U.S.
government, the International Federation of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent:
this assistance, which included medical equipment, was distributed to 201
hospitals around the country.

In May
2021 Global Health Intelligence (GHI) published a report that took the pulse,
so to speak, of the medical
equipment market in Colombia. In this report GHI shared findings and
industry trends that included significant growth in the sales of medical
devices used to treat COVID patients, particularly ventilators (80%) and
patient monitoring systems (15%). Click here to read it.

In
addition, GHI recently analyzed medical equipment acquisition trends among
hospitals in Colombia and calculate the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for
the changes in the amounts of different types of medical equipment in these
hospitals between 2019 and 2023. Based on these calculations and other
analysis, below you’ll find the types of medical equipment with the largest
projected growth in 2022, along with the ones that will contract the most next
year.

The
COVID-19 pandemic has presented many challenges for countries around the world,
and Latin America has not been an exception. However, the pandemic has also
produced the possibility of developing innovative ideas, such as the prototype
device to intubate COVID-19 patients without the danger of infecting healthcare
teams. It’s also led to greater acquisitions of state-of-the-art equipment,
such as surgery robots or angiometers used to diagnose and treat complex
pathologies through minimally invasive procedures.

Global
Health Intelligence (GHI) has years of experience in market intelligence gained
through extensive research, along with 7 years of continual work in developing
HospiScope, which in turn allows the company to produce data-driven market
projections and to take the pulse of key hospital markets in Latin America. GHI’s
recent data indicates that in 2020
Argentina’s hospitals posted significant increases in their acquisition of
specialized medical equipment such as hemodialysis machines (+15.1%), MRI
machines (+14.9%) and linear accelerators (10.7%). The company has also noted
increases during 2020 in the acquisition of basic equipment such as patient
monitoring systems (+16.8%), infusion pumps (6.8%) and ventilators (4.9%),
which are clearly linked to treating patients during the pandemic.

Through
our analyses we have recently calculated the compound annual growth rate (CAGR)
of more than 30 different types of medical equipment in Argentina for the
period of 2019-2023. Based on these calculations, below we offer projections
for 10 categories of medical equipment and devices that will grow the most in
Argentina during 2022, along with 5 that are projected to contract the most
next year.

We show the bright spots, the not-so-bright spots and offer near-term projections to help you plan

While Chile’s medical equipment/devices
market did not post the broad growth of Argentina’s in 2020 — nor a significant
increase in a category like diagnostic imaging equipment, as occurred with
Mexico — Chile still posted some impressive numbers. Moreover, Chile’s 362
hospitals increased their counts of both basic equipment and high-ticket
specialized equipment, which suggests diverse targeting potential for companies.
Here’s a look at the areas that expanded the most.

Basic Breakdown

Even though Chile did not suffer as strongly
from the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, its increases in basic
equipment shows that the crisis still impacted its healthcare systems:

Patient monitoring
systems: 52.3% increase

Infusion pumps: 47.7%
increase

Anesthesia machines: 9.2%
increase

Ventilators: 4.1%
increase

EKG machines: 6.8%
increase

X-ray machines: 1.9%
increase

Despite these jumps, Chilean hospitals
didn’t increase their levels of all forms of basic equipment: for example,
counts of ultrasound machines went down by 2.1% in 2020.

A Special Case

Several specialized equipment types saw
surges in Chilean hospitals in 2020, while others contracted sharply. The list below
includes both the equipment that most decreased and that which most increased
in Chile in 2020:

Endoscopic lithotripsy
equipment: -27.7% decrease

Cobalt therapy machines:
-15.5% decrease

Stereotactic mammography
machines: -12.3% decrease

Lithotripter machines:
-7.5% decrease

Hemodialysis machines:
-2.5% decrease

Bone densitometers: -1.9%
decrease

Fluoroscopes: -1.9%
decrease

C-arms: 1.2% increase

Angiograms: 5.4% increase

Gamma cameras: 6.2%
increase

Laparoscopic surgery
equipment: 8.3% increase

MRI machines: 15.1%
increase

CT scanners: 18.6%
increase

Linear accelerators:
19.8% increase

PET systems: 34.6%
increase

Medical Equipment Market Growth in Chile, 2019-2023

For sales and marketing planning,
longer-term projections are more helpful to strategize, map out product
launches and target markets more effectively. GHI’s HospiScope 2020
report not only lists the best-equipped hospitals in Chile and in 9 other key
LatAm markets, it also uses proprietary HospiScope data to forecast
growth/contraction for the next few years. Below we break down these numbers
for the equipment types we’ve discussed thus far. The uneven nature of Chile’s
medical equipment market, which we saw with the 2020 figures, is even more
pronounced in these near-term projections, which indicate the compound annual
growth rate for 2019-2023.

Projected to contract:

Cobalt therapy machines:
-25% decrease

Patient monitoring
systems: -20% decrease

Infusion pumps: -19% decrease

PET systems: -16% decrease

Stereotactic mammography
machines: -13% decrease

Lithotripter machines: -9%
decrease

Angiograms: -6% decrease

Fluoroscopes: -5%
decrease

EKG machines: -4% decrease

CT scanners: -3% decrease

Linear accelerators: -2%
decrease

Projected to expand:

Gamma cameras: 64%
increase

Bone densitometers: 28% increase

Anesthesia machines: 17%
increase

Endoscopic lithotripsy
equipment: 10% increase

Laparoscopic surgery
equipment: 6% increase

Ventilators: 5%
increase

Hemodialysis machines: 4%
increase

MRI machines: 4% increase

X-ray machines: 3%
increase

C-arms: 1.2% increase

Going beyond the Numbers

What is driving the uneven numbers we are
seeing in Chile?

Which of Chile’s hospitals are the best
sales prospects for basic medical equipment?

Which hospitals in Chile tend to acquire
more high-tech medical equipment?

To get at these answers and make a deeper
dive into the Chilean medical market, GHI offers a suite of services.

In the past, we’ve reported on the strong projected growth for Latin America’s pharmaceutical market, including specialty drugs for common conditions such as diabetes. But when you look at the different markets within the region, they each have their own challenges and developments. We decided to highlight some key recent developments to help pharmaceutical industry professionals have a quick understanding of what’s happening in different markets.

ANMAT (Administración Nacional de Medicamentos, Alimentos y Técnología Médica) recently approved an anti-obesity medication called liraglutide that’s administered daily via an injectable pen. Liraglutide (sold under the brand name Victoza in many markets) has been shown to produce significant weight loss benefits.

ANMAT also approved another medication — one of the most expensive in the world. Spinraza is used to treat spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a rare neuromuscular disorder. Spinraza has shown to be effective against 3 of the types of SMA, but the first year of treatment can cost $600,000 and the second year can cost up to $300,000.

PharmaDorf arrived in Argentina in 2016 and recently has beefed up its sales structure by 40%, projecting to double its investment in the Argentine market in 2019, as well as its sales. The company is mostly focused on women’s health, respiratory, cardiovascular and neuroscience. Some of its brands include Avancel, Livianne, Drolzen, Tritace and Cervilane.

Argentine pharma firm Laboratorios Bagó has become a leader in the Chinese market, with a 45% market share of the amoxicillin-sulbactam antibiotics market. Bagó has been exporting to China for 20 years and grew from selling 150,000 units of its products to 4.2 million units in 2018.

These include Lenvima (lenvatnib mesylate) for renal cancer, Lynparza (olaparib) for ovarian cancer, Keytruda (pembrolizumab) for skin cancer and Blincyto (blinatumomabe) for leukemia.

These are far from the only recent cancer breakthroughs in Brazil. Biological medicine is an up-and-coming cancer treatment that doesn’t have as many side effects as chemotherapy, and Mvasi (bevacizumabe) has now joined the ranks of biological medicines that are approved in Brazil for treating colorectal cancer, breast cancer and more.

The factory is over 14,000 square feet and will create 500 new jobs in the region.
