Where to target your sales efforts

While we know that medical equipment and devices are experiencing strong growth in Latin America — along with several other healthcare segments — that doesn’t always translate into sales just by itself.

It’s crucial to know exactly how to focus the efforts of your sales team. And one of the best ways to do that is to start by seeing what’s selling.

Our HospiScope database tracks the types of medical devices, equipment and consumables that Latin American hospitals buy the most. We have 15 countries in the database right now and expect have 17 countries in the database by the end of this year.

We reviewed the data to identify the medical equipment categories that grew in different countries in Latin America between 2017 and 2018. Here’s a quick look, market by market:

Argentina (Market Size: 2,361 hospitals)

4% growth in infusion pumps, 2017-2018

5% growth in hemodialysis machines, 2017-2018

Bolivia (Market Size: 214 hospitals)

9% growth in C-Arms, 2017-2018

5% growth in colposcopes, 2017-2018

Brazil (Market Size: 6,161 hospitals)

8% growth in nuclear medicine systems, 2017-2018

2% growth in stereotactic mammography machines, 2017-2018

Chile (Market Size: 381 hospitals)

6% growth in endoscopy towers, 2017-2018

2% growth in X-ray machines, 2017-2018

Colombia (Market Size: 2,623 hospitals)

5% growth in endoscopy machines, 2017-2018

6% growth in mammography equipment, 2017-2018

Costa Rica (Market Size: 158 hospitals)

3% growth in C-arms, 2017-2018

7% growth in linear accelerators, 2017-2018

Dominican Republic (Market Size: 864 hospitals)

6% growth in ultrasound machines, 2017-2018

4% growth in C-arms, 2017-2018

Guatemala (Market Size: 163 hospitals)

5% growth in ultrasound machines, 2017-2018
2.8% growth in X-ray machines, 2017-2018

Mexico (Market Size: 3,344 hospitals)

6.2% growth in MRI machines, 2017-2018
17.7% growth in angiogram systems, 2017-2018

Peru (Market Size: 813 hospitals)

1% growth in laparoscopic surgery equipment, 2017-2018

4% growth in nuclear medicine systems, 2017-2018

Puerto Rico (Market Size: 67 hospitals)

8% growth in echocardiogram machines, 2017-2018

6% growth in anesthesia machines, 2017-2018

Next Steps to Sell

Of course, this is just a quick look. Our data shows that many more equipment categories posted growth in 2017-2018 as Latin American hospitals added significant amounts of base installed and capital equipment.

While knowing about these growth categories is helpful, what’s crucial is knowing which specific hospitals in these markets are acquiring this equipment and devices — and who at these hospitals handles the purchasing decisions.

This is where HospiScope can help. Subscribing to this database will uncover the buyers and allow your sales team to identify the hottest prospects for outreach.

Moreover, HospiScope data allows you to conduct sales propension analysis so as to predict which accounts have the best potential in the coming months — or years.

Contact us for a demo of HospiScope so you can see how strategic data will spike your sales of medical equipment and devices in Latin America.

A blend of analyses and data pieces to help LatAm medical device and healthcare professionals

One of the challenges in working with the LatAm healthcare industry is that data is often scarce, unreliable or out of data.

We noticed this while conducting healthcare research projects for different companies, and this led to us create HospiScope to track information about Latin American hospitals, as well as ShareScope for market data and In-Scope for more specific market intelligence work.

Obviously this blog is one of the ways we used to start promoting a freer flow of information in what has been kind of a data desert, but lately we have been publishing even more complimentary resources about Latin America’s medical devices and equipment market, as well as LatAm’s healthcare system.

Since you may not have heard of all of them, we wanted to let you know about them and give you direct access to them in one place.

Connected Medical Devices market is estimated at USD5 billion in 2016 to USD8.3 billion in 2021 at a CAGR of 10.68%.

The connected medical devices market is estimated to grow from US$5 billion in 2016 to US$8.3 billion in 2021, with a CAGR of 10.68% during that time period.

The growth in the market is promising and currently accounts for ~5% of the medical device market, and is anticipated to capture more than 25% market over the next few years. Platforms are the budding part of the connected medical devices market. Few platforms are needed when compared to processors or sensors, the platforms represent aggregation points for data gathered from network endpoints.

However, as the number of on-premise and cloud solutions for collecting and analyzing device data increase so does the importance and value of platforms. The Internet of Things (IoT) is beneficial for the Connected Medical Devices market where new opportunities are abundant for current medical device manufacturers and connectivity specialists. Suppliers of sensors, platforms and processors are partnering with device manufacturers and service providers to address escalating demand for clinical devices. Also, regulatory reforms by the FDA and other agencies are creating new opportunities for device manufacturers.

Despite its early stage, Connected Medical Devices market provides a sturdy base for other enabling technologies- connecting new and existing devices with either embedded processors or radio technologies, or external connectivity gateways. Connected Medical Devices should benefit the Embedded Processors market segment, where multiple microprocessors and microcontrollers are used by system integrators and OEM manufacturers. The sensor segment is expanding rapidly (24.9% CAGR) as new applications are deployed across device segments. In addition to the diversity of applications and participants in the Embedded Processors marketplace, chipset manufacturers provide multiple processor configurations, each adaptable to multiple designs for connected medical devices.

The global neurostimulation device market was estimated at USD1,902 million in 2016 and expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.67% between 2017-2025

The global neurostimulation device market was estimated at USD1,902 million in 2016 and expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.67% between 2017-2025 to reach an estimated USD4,004 million by 2025. A major driving factor for the market is that neurostimulation devices help in the therapeutic activation of many neurological diseases. The risk of contracting infections at the time of implantation or safety issues regarding patients being in contact with, or, near to electromagnetic radiation and electrical and gas-powered appliances. Also, any malfunction of implanted device may go unnoticed by the patient leading to higher risks.

The North America region has the highest share in the market, with the United States being the major contributor. However, markets such as the Asia- Pacific are promising to exhibit the fastest growth in the forecast period. Factors such as a large patient base and increasing investments in healthcare sectors in countries like China and Japan are proving favorable for the market growth. Despite the increasing competition, the neurostimulation devices market will continue to be dominated by North America owing to factors such as continual support and interest of global investors thanks to the advances in technology and the government’s increased focus on improving patient safety and procedure efficiency by using neurostimulation devices.

The major players in the market include St Jude Medical, Medtronic, Boston Scientific, Aleva Neurotherapeutics, Cogentix Medical, Depuy Synthes Companies, Dr. Langer Medical GMBH, EBS Technologies, Intrapace, Neurological Surgery PC, Neuronetics, Nevro, and the Magstim Company.

A report by the Colombian Association of Hospitals and Clinics (ACHC) revealed that the debt to hospitals and clinics for the provision of health services in the country reached USD7.3trillion, the largest amount of portfolio owed in the last 18 years.

A report by the Colombian Association of Hospitals and Clinics (ACHC) revealed that the debt to hospitals and clinics for the provision of health services in the country reached USD7.3trillion, the largest amount of portfolio owed in the last 18 years.

The study notes that EPSs from the contributory scheme remain the largest debtors of hospitals with USD2.9bn, or 40% of total debt. Second is the EPS of the subsidized regime, with 32.5% of the debt, followed by the State (including territorial entities and the Fosyga) with USD742,706mn. The remaining money is owed by companies of prepaid medicine, insurers Soat, magisterio, IPS, companies and individuals.

The ACHC pointed out that in the face of this “critical” situation, the government must guarantee the payment of debts of entities in liquidation such as Saludcoop and Caprecom and those of the newly sold Cafesalud EPS, which represent 67% of non-performing loans, to avoid detriment to the country’s health sector.
