Mikel Arriola, head of the Comisión Federal para la Protección contra Riesgos Sanitarios (COFEPRIS) of the Ministry of Health, has announced that COFEPRIS will seek certification of the World Health Organization (WHO) regarding medical devices, once it has obtained endorsement for medicines and vaccines. He said that the main objectives of WHO certification of devices Medical are to facilitate access of latest generation medical devices to Mexicans patients and accelerate the trade of these products for human health. The head of COFEPRIS noted that the health agency already has the backing of the international agency for medicines and vaccines, so in 2016 they will be working to obtain certification in medical devices supported by WHO. He also said that they are working with the WHO and PAHO (Pan American Health Organization) so that from 2016 onwards COFEPRIS can also be certified for medical devices. The seizure of illegal medical devices reached around 2.3 million units in 32 operations that were conducted in 8 states of Mexico.
